Our laboratory is responsible for English Education.

One of the goals for English education at TTI is to train future engineers who have English proficiency sufficient enough to play a leadership role in a globalized society. To achieve this goal, we provide a two-step approach to English teaching. Frist and second year students study exclusively the fundamentals of English to develop basic English skills, and third and fourth year students study a variety of advanced English courses, such as Technical Reading, Technical Presentation, and Technical Writing for English. They are encouraged to study advanced English and English specific to their specialty. Students also have an opportunity to take social science and humanities courses which are taught in English, and they not only study English but also other subjects in English. TOEIC-IP is offered two or more times a year to measure the improvement of English proficiency. E-SUP (English Step-Up Point System) is one important mechanism in place to motivate students continuously to study English skills until graduation. Under this system, they must earn 100 points to graduate. Points can be earned by taking the TOEIC(-IP), and participating in a variety of activities held at iPlaza, a speech contest, study-abroad programs, and some others. E-SUP also functions as a reward system, in which some students with a specified amount of points can get awards (e.g., aid for studying abroad) depending on the points they have earned.
